Data Destruction Services

Who can trust PowerON's Secure Data Destruction Services?

  • Private Businesses
  • Corporations
  • Hospitals
  • Financial Institutions
  • Government Agencies
  • Military Agencies

Even when customers “delete” data most computers do not actually remove the contents of a file when it is deleted. Likewise, reformatting, repartitioning or reimaging a system is not always guaranteed to write to every area of the disk, though all will cause the disk to appear empty to most software. Instead, they simply remove the file's entry from the file system directory. The contents of the file -- the actual data -- remain on the storage device. Corporate entities involved in Trade-in, Recycling and Repair based services take on an added liability of confidential information stewardship which makes it vitally important that PowerON Services Inc. sets up and manages a secure, verified and certified data destruction process.

Specific data destruction methods provided by PowerON Services Inc. include:

  • Overwriting
  • Degaussing
  • Physical Destruction

Should confidential information about a businesses customers or finances or a new product or service become publicly available information, such a breach of security could lead to lost business, law suits or even bankruptcy of the business. Protecting confidential information is an ethical, and in many cases, a legal requirement for corporate entities involved in Trade-in, Recycling and Repair based services. ***Sarbanes-Oxley Act poses additional reporting requirements on Publicly Traded Companies disposing of assets containing data storage devices. PowerON Services Inc. can help Publicly Traded Companies to properly certify the data destruction process when disposing of excess corporate assets.

Destruction Methods Defined

OVERWRITING is the most common method used to “wipe” or “shred” data on electronic storage devices. This method is a low cost option to ensuring data is destroyed by overwriting new data over the existing data. Advanced overwrite methods use specific overwrite patterns intended to destroy any trace signatures of the existing data. This method is highly effective and allows the electronic storage device to be reliably reused. PowerON’s standard overwriting methods: 1x Overwrite = CLEAR, 3x Overwrite = SANITIZED for Non-Classified Data Storage Media. **As of Nov 2007, overwriting is no longer a DoD-acceptable sanitization method for magnetic media. Only degaussing or physical destruction is acceptable.

DEGAUSSING is the removal or reduction of a magnetic field. Applied to magnetic media, degaussing may purge an entire media element quickly and effectively. A device, called a degausser, designed for the media being erased, is used. Degaussing often renders data storage devices inoperable. **All Data Storage Devices that are intended for physical destruction through a 3rd party (per customer process requirements) will be processed for data destruction certification using a degausser or physical destruction prior to leaving PowerON’s physical possession.

PHYSICAL DESTRUCTIONof the data storage device is considered the best method to ensure information confidentiality. This method is the physical breaking the data storage device apart, by grinding, shredding, drilling, etc. Physical destruction has the highest cost of all data destruction methods. Not only is the process labor intensive and time-consuming, it renders the data storage device totally unusable. Physical Destruction is DoD certified for the destruction of Classified Information.
